In this comprehensive, instructor led Introduction to Hand Building course, students will learn the basics of hand building techniques and beyond!  No experience required to take this class!

This is a 5 week course with an optional 6th week built in to the class schedule in the event of cancellation due to inclement weather.  Students will learn the following main techniques with the general class schedule week by week as follows: 

Clay and Hand Building Basics:  Wedging clay, clay dryness stages, glazing, and surface decoration, Slab forming, slab building, coil pots, pinch pots, sculpting, cutters, templates, and molds.  

  Students will also learn how to embellish and decorate their work.

Week 1:  Basic pinch pot teacups with handles and feet. Slab drape mold formed plates/trays with feet.

Week 2: Glazing and Coil-Built Bowls.  Build a bowl out of clay coils and learn how to glaze handbuilt projects.

Week 3: Slab built mugs- Students will learn to build their own mugs out of clay slabs using textured patterns if desired and learn how to make and attach handles that fit the profile of the mug.

Week 4: Sculpture Basics.  Learn how to sculpt an animal or small figurine.

Week 5: Lidded fairy house jars.  Learn how to construct your own detailed fairy house jar outting the skills you've learned throughout the course to the test.

Projects from weeks 4 and 5 may take extra time (2-3 weeks) to complete firings.  Students will be contacted when their projects are ready to pick up.

All clay, glaze and tools are included for the duration of the class

CANCELLATION POLICY:  Cancellations are accepted up to 24 hours before the event and refunds/rescheduling will be granted.  

Cancellations after the 24-hour cut off will not be refunded, but a class credit may be offered.

No Shows will not be refunded.

MISSING A CLASS:  Things happen, so if you need to miss a class during the 5 week period, please let your instructor know.  Make-ups may be granted depending on schedule availability but are not guaranteed.  

INCLEMENT WEATHER:  If there is inclement weather and class needs to be cancelled your instructor will send out a group text to the class, so please provide your phone numbers when registering or on the first day of class.  If class is cancelled, the schedule will shift out 1 week.  If there is more than 1 weather event during the class period, the agenda may be adjusted.
