Introduction to Wheel Throwing is an instructor led class spanning 5-6 weeks. Each class is 120-minutes (2 hour) and is limited to 6 people for focused, individual attention. This class covers all basics of throwing clay on the potter's wheel and is the perfect class for beginners of for those who need a refresher.  This class is held once per week on Sunday Morning’s for 5 weeks (10 hours total) from 10am to noon at Ridgeline Ceramics Studio, located at 10N Main st. Bldg 3A, Voorheesville, NY 12186.

Note: An additional 6th week may be necessary for glazing pots if it takes a week or so to make your first one.

  • Basic tool introduction
  • Clay Safety
  • Wedging clay
  • Centering clay on the potter's wheel
  • Coning up/down
  • Pulling walls and shaping the clay
  • Basic Trimming
  • Glazing Basics

Wear old clothes or an apron, you will get messy!

Classes will be held on the following dates with the general class topics covered in each session:

October 12th:  Topics Covered: Basic Intro to throwing, pottery tools and clay safety. How to sit at the wheel, bracing/stabilizing the body, wedging clay, centering.  We will start throwing on day 1!

October 19th:  Practice wedging, centering the clay, coning up and down, pulling walls. We will make our first real pot!

October 26th: Continuing to work on the above and practice pulling even walls. Troubleshooting air bubbles, uneven walls, clay compression and learning some tricks of the trade.  Make as many pots as you can using your new skills! If you threw any pots successfully from last week, we can start to work on trimming. 

November 2nd:  Continuing to hone your new skills, practice and refine.  Any pieces from the previous week will be bisqued and ready for glazing!

November 9th: Glazing! We will cover the basics of prepping bisque ware (first firing) as well as glazing basics. 

Your last thrown pots will be fired and ready for pick up the following week. Any “stragglers” will be fired as they are ready and picked up within 1-2 weeks.

Students will be supplied with 25lbs (1 lug) of clay for this class.  This is yours to keep.  Students will be able to glaze and fire the pieces they make and take them home. 

CANCELLATION POLICY:  Cancellations are accepted up to 24 hours before the event and refunds/rescheduling will be granted.

Cancellations after the 24-hour cut off will not be refunded, but a class credit may be offered.

No Shows will not be refunded.
